The UN SDGs are intended to provide local communities and organizations with a set of interdependent benchmarks and actions to improve human lives and protect the environment. The implementation of the SDGs is also localized but has not directly focused on the unique needs and frameworks of Indigenous Peoples. How do the SDGs align with or work contrary to Indigenous frameworks for human and planetary health? This Case takes place in the primary production sector in Aotearoa, specifically, farming, forestry, and fishing. How are Māori-owned primary production businesses navigating the tensions of economic and environmental health? We will use the Māori understanding of environmental stewardship, Ki Uta Ki Tai (from the mountains to the sea), to focus on Iwi businesses including sheep and beef farming, dairy farming, forestry, and fishing. How are these businesses tackling the pressures of operating a business in a context overlaid with complex environmental issues and compounding economic pressure to deliver valued outcomes (social, economic, cultural, and environmental) to their Māori shareholders/beneficiaries? How does their ancestral knowledge provide guidance in their decision-making and business operations?
Designed with a Kaupapa Māori methodology, this Case will use a combination of interviews kanohi ki te kanahi (face to face), community-based wananga (community gatherings), and photography and video recordings to document decision-making strategies of these Māori-owned businesses and their impact on communities/stakeholders. We will also engage musicians and artists to produce visual, narrative, and oral pūrakau (stories) of how these businesses enact Ki Uta Ki Tai. We will share these creative products as well as reports and academic papers with Māori businesses to provide a pathway for using an Indigenous framework to adapt and reframe their businesses. This research will also be used to assess the validity of the UN SDGs for Indigenous communities. We will host our site visit in Y3 (see LoS).
